Mother Teresa and the Nobel Peace Prize

Outline what the Nobel peace prize is and the origins of the prize

The Nobel Peace Prize was created by Alfred Nobel, before he died he wrote his will, in it contained the founding principles for the Nobel Peace prize, he wrote that the Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded to someone who:
‘...shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.’
The first Nobel peace prize was awarded in 1901, by a panel of Norwegian judges, from then on the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony is held annually and there have been 91 Nobel Peace winners.

Mother Teresa was born in Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26th 1910. At a young age she felt the call of God and she wanted to be a missionary and spread joy, love and happiness to the world.
When she was 18 she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and soon after was sent to India where she took her vows to become a nun, she became a nun on the 24th May 1931.
Mother Teresa worked in a school slum of India where she taught under privileged children, she was faced with many hardships including extreme poverty.
On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", her primary focus was to care for the poorest of the poor.

Explain why the person was awarded the prize and when.

Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She was recognised for her all the tireless years she spent working towards peace and love throughout the community.  She worked to help the children and the refugees and the very poorest in the community.

Explain why the person became involved in the work

Mother Teresa had always felt that she had a special connection with God and that’s what made her join the ‘The Sister’s of Lorento’ when she was only 18. From then on Mother Teresa worked towards her dream of making the community in which she lived, a happier and safer place.
